About Shira Ballon
The paintings shown here are the product of an interest in the meeting place of scientific and educational imagery (diagrams of molecules, constellations, maps, timelines) with an abstract expressionist painterly sensibility. I was, in a sense, attempting to grasp onto definitive concepts, take ownership or at least participate in conversations about important things - science, history, astronomy, geography - important and beautiful things; with only my own tools for joining in. The process is a principal part of the work. The relationship between intuition and chance, and premeditated ideas and guidelines, as well as where they fall apart, is what makes the work continuously interesting for me to make. The drawings shown are more recent work created during a six month sabbatical in Jerusalem, Israel. Here I use a very similar process - in this case using water and ink to create the first, chance marks. I go back in and explore the imagery, recalling tree bark, sandstone, fossils, and connect with what has occurred naturally. Shira Ballon is an artist born and raised in Palo Alto. She graduated form the University of California, Irvine with a degree in Studio Art.
