I paint interpretive expressions of landscape and still life in oil. I start with the close connection I feel when I am observing subjects in nature, such as the sea, California hills or flowers. I use nature as my point of departure to explore the incredible color, texture and transparency range of oil paint to create an emotional impression of the scene or object.
Since childhood I have enjoyed hiking, running, biking, camping and backpacking in the open country. I also enjoy gardening, including growing flowers as potential subjects. Painting landscape and still life is a way to connect with nature and capture that feeling for myself and others to enjoy.
I resist formula and simply try to express the essence of what I see and feel. I often make sketches and small paintings on location and use them to inform my studio pieces.
