Mingei celebrates the “every-day-ness” of art—the belief that everyday objects and materials that often serve a useful purpose can also be objects of great beauty. I have long been fascinated by the concept of Mingei. In my current work I strive to create work that satisfies utility without compromising form and aesthetics. Serving pieces, vases, platters, plates, muffin pans and more. I find atmospheric firings (wood-fire, soda, salt) complement and enhance these forms. After 40 years of working with clay, I continue to be in awe of the surfaces developed at high temperatures over time.
As a beginning student of Ikebana (Wafu) I am also exploring forms appropriate for Ikebana use. It has been exciting and challenging.
