I am a jazz musician who also loves to create dynamic visual objects. I combine tile, broken tile and found objects into mosaic improvisations. My backgrounds in floral design, mathematics and music inform my work.
My brain looks for lines and rhythm and is attracted to possible patterns arising from the pieces. Compositional ideas are committed with glues and grouts to become a harmonious whole. The works are smooth enough for functionality as tabletops, but they also invite tactile exploration of varying surface levels. Let your eyes meander along the cracks and enjoy a visual harmony.
My inspiration in this medium came from seeing the ‘trencadis’ broken tile mosaics in Barcelona and the Islamic palace tilings and reliefs in the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. I derived further inspiration near home, managing a local warehouse of Moroccan handmade décor.
Open Studio guests will peruse garden art, tiled tables, mosaic wall hangings, and a 20-foot long, mural mosaic entitled “Water’s Journey.”
