About Nan Lu

Nan Lu born and raised in Shanghai, China. She worked for magazines as a
feature editor for 8 years after she graduated from college in Shanghai. In
2013, she moved to San Francisco, California and started photography
studying. In 2016, Nan graduated from Academy of Art University and
received her Master Degree of Fine Art. She has had multiple solo and
group exhibitions in the Bay Area in recent years.
“Self-Portrait” is a fine art photography project. It combines film shooting, digital
editing and use of contact printing process techniques. This is my first series of Self-
Portraits, but the models are not exactly all me. I asked models to wear my clothes and
to recreate the poses I showed them in order to represent many different version of
myself. For this project, I added a Vandyke brown process on vellum paper as the over
layer on the ink-jet printed images. These materials perfectly support all the visual
effects that I want to present in this series. The rendered effects include the texture of
the images, distinct 2 color tone, 3 dimensional vision. These effects show my inner
personality. There are 11, 16x20 inch, and 5 8x10 inch images in total, and they are
mounted in the gallery standard walnut wood light boxes.
