Sullivan’s imagery moves through multiple different mediums and, as such, is driven primarily by personal expression. Always capitalizing on a bold use of dramatic gesture and explosive movement, much of her work can be traced back to her abstraction of visual forays into the natural as well as human environments. A unique quality of her imagery is that she does not distinguish between the use of pure shape and recognizable form, and does not hesitate to combine both.
Most accurately described as an “experimental artist,” any message, if indeed it is communicated, emerges from the process but is not defined by it. There is a beginning and there may be an end, but everything within that framework is largely unpremeditated. Each new mark made suggests the next one. That being said, the process does not preclude the significance of meaning in any single work.
