I create detailed mosaics using vibrantly colored stained glass. Working in both direct and indirect methods to create mosaics, each piece of stained glass is hand-cut, with colors carefully chosen to emphasize light and shadows, giving depth to the compositions.
Raised in California, Pennsylvania and New York, I have been influenced by botanicals, the ocean and photography. I received my BA in Studio Art/Graphic Design from Stanford University with a concentration in graphic design, painting, printmaking, and photography. I have studied master works of art while living in Florence, Italy. My environmental interests developed while working in marine geology, when I joined a submarine research expedition off the East coast of Florida. Environmental subjects have remained a life-long focus of my art.
My work is influenced by the rich tones, organic shapes and lighting of Edward Weston’s photos; by the contrast and tonal range of Ansel Adams’ photos showing the textures of the natural world; and by the cropping, scaling and abstract forms of Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings.
I am grateful to have studied with many professional mosaic artists who have generously shared their knowledge and experience of a variety of mosaic techniques. After studying with Mia Tavonatti in 2018, I fully embraced the vast possibilities of using stained glass in mosaics. The current focus of my work is to highlight the beauty of the natural world, with an emphasis on natural elements with medicinal properties.
I currently reside in the San Francisco Bay Area as a full-time mosaic artist following years in corporate graphic design.
