Linda Gass
I’m best known for my intricately stitched paintings about climate change, water, and land use. My birds-eye view landscapes blend painting on silk with quilting and embroidery techniques to highlight the human marks on the landscape. I also work in public art, community engaged land art installation, and glass. Inspired and informed by historical and scientific research, my work uses beauty to make the serious and difficult nature of my subject matter more accessible, with a goal to inspire awareness and action.
I exhibit my work nationally and internationally, including at the Museum of Craft and Design, Oakland Museum, the Bellevue Art Museum, and the US Embassy in Moscow. My work can be found in several public and private collections including the Langson Institute and Museum of California Art, the International Quilt Museum, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and the Kapor Center for Social Impact. I recently completed a large glass art commission for an affordable housing project in San Jose. My awards include the prestigious Fleishhacker Eureka Fellowship Award, SV Creates Artist Laureate, and more recently the Playa Summer Lake Wildfire and Water Residency and the Big Basin Art About residency.
When I’m not making art or championing environmental causes, you can find me backpacking, camping, and hiking in the wilderness areas of the West where I find much of the inspiration for my work.
