I’ve always loved the figure, and since moving to California have become entranced with nature, as well. I combine the two to construct a narrative, more poetry than realism. Although my work is representational, it is not realistic. I am more interested in communicating feeling rather than a photographic rendition.
Having played classical piano all my life, I think of my paintings as symphonic. I particularly appreciate the deep, rich, harmonic sounds of the romantic composers such as Brahms and Schumann. Like them I compose my paintings using a complex array of thickly layered color, texture and pattern to create a rich tableau.
I work with oil pastels, paint sticks and graphite on canvas, manipulating the malleable surface with razor blades, clay tools, stamps, stencils, brushes and solvent.
I started my artistic studies at The Art Students League in NYC while in high school, I earned a BFA from Washington University and studied in Florence, Italy for six months. While living in NY I regularly attended figure drawing sessions and composed paintings with oil pastels, as I do now. I had several shows, including a piece at the Museo Del Barrio in New York City.
Thirty-five years ago when I moved to California, got married and started a family, I took a hiatus from art. Recently I have started up again. I have a studio at Art Bias in San Carlos and joined Gallery House in January 2021. I have participated in Silicon Valley Open Studios 2019 – 2021, Art Bias Holiday Show 2019 and Gallery House 2021 exhibits: “Through My Window”, Going Places, and “It’s Hot”.
