I began painting with encaustic twelve years ago, after seeing a painting by Julie Dzikiewicz during an open studio at the Workhouse Art Center in Lorton, VA. I was mesmerized by the luminosity and colors of the medium, and fascinated by watching the process – layers of melted wax fused together with the fire from a torch? Hell yeah!
When I returned home to California, I took classes at Wax Works West in Corralitos (sadly, no longer open) and loved learning the flexibility of working with encaustic, a medium that dates back almost 2,000 years to portraits for mummies in Egypt.
My artwork has a technology and math influence but I also find myself drawn toward the fluidity of oceanic images and the sky. As a sailor and a pilot, I’ve spent a good portion of my life living on the water or surfing through clouds. I’ve enjoyed learning to channel my feelings through the wax as it moves from a brick of paint to a molten state, and back to a solid upon cooling. I love the flexibility and challenge of this medium.
