The letterpress artisans of the San José Printers’ Guild create distinctive prints, posters, and small books, using decades-old metal fonts, wood type, engravings, and ornaments. These types and images are carefully composed and then impressed into fine papers using vintage iron presses. Guild members volunteer to staff the "Printing Office" at History Park in San Jose on weekends throughout the year. Museum visitors are able to view antique printing equipment in action, and hear explanations of every step of the printing process. The guild also hosts workshops to allow community members to print their own compositions, using type, press, ink, and paper.
For Open Studio we are featuring the work of guild member Matt Kelsey, who has designed and printed commemorative letterpress posters each year since 2014 for the guild’s annual event, the SF Bay Area Printers’ Fair & Wayzgoose. Open Studio visitors will be able to observe the printing process in action, and see fresh ink pressed into soft paper.
