Abby Zhang

I have had the privilege of studying oil painting under the tutelage of Boris Kokhno, retired professor from the renowned Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, and Alexander Zimin, internationally acclaimed Russian painter.

My style combines vibrant, sophisticated colors with expressive brushwork. It balances the looseness of impressionism with a more structured approach to depicting form. I strive to capture the fleeting effect of light, atmosphere and emotional resonance with sensitivity.

In addition to Russian impressionism, I am also influenced by Japanese and Chinese artistic principles such as simplicity, mindful use of white space, artistic conception, wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection and transience), and a deep reverence of nature.

My work has been showcased in prominent exhibitions including the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, the Salon International Juried Exhibition, and the California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition.

I am an artist member of the prestigious California Art Club, founded in 1909 and shaped by early California impressionists such as Edgar Payne, William Wendt and Guy Rose.
