Fiona McDonnell
Fiona McDonnell
Fiona has been painting and drawing most of her life. Selling paintings at the Ann Arbor Art Fair, in MI, both began during her studies in college and helped fund part of her education. Fiona has since exhibited and sold her work in museums, galleries, art fairs, and has often done commission work. She also co-founded a non-profit art gallery and has given volunteer time to help with many causes. Fiona’s last art show revealed her love of whales. She did a series of paintings depicting whales swimming under water as an homage to their majesty and deep concern for their home in the ocean. Proceeds from the sale of the paintings were donated to organizations that protect whales and their ocean habitat.
Fiona has a very diverse background. She was widely recognized for her work as a Museum Curator, transforming an aging lighthouse into a first class museum. She also taught environmental education, natural history and art, inspiring young people and adults with her classes, interpretative tours and lectures. Her love and passion for the protection of the natural world and art, led to a degree in Environmental Science and a job at a Nature Center where she worked as a Naturalist / Educator and Wildlife Rehabilitator. She has also painted murals and designed educational exhibits.
Fiona also developed a therapy background, working with inner city children and women at a domestic violence shelter and as a Recovery Counselor at an eating Disorder Treatment Facility. As this area of Fiona’s professional life unfolded, she also attainted certification in Eco Therapy.
Fiona’s interest in weaving can be traced back to when she first observed birds making nests out of the natural materials that they find in nature. Much like the birds that she loves, Fiona finds natural pieces as she hikes about and then designs weavings that reflect the beauty of the Earth’s natural treasures. EarthWeaves have become part of Fiona’s artistic response to nature and her dedication to the vital need to preserve and protect the exquisite flora and fauna on this planet.
