Art, for me, is a way to capture the fleeting beauty of the world around us; both the obvious and the overlooked. Originally from New York City, I have been living in Silicon Valley for over six years, where the contrast between nature and innovation continually inspires my work. With a background in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Neuro-Psychology, I am fascinated by the intricate patterns and structures that shape both the natural and cognitive worlds. This scientific foundation influences my artistic approach, as I explore the connections between form, function, and perception. Working primarily with gouache and watercolor, I blend these delicate, fluid mediums with bold elements like ink, acrylic, and gold leaf to create layered, textural pieces that evoke both spontaneity and intention. My process often begins with urban sketching or plein air painting, allowing me to immerse myself in a scene, absorbing its light, movement, and emotion. Through this exploration, I seek to uncover hidden details, transforming ordinary moments into compositions that highlight the richness of our surroundings.
At the heart of my work is a deep appreciation for finding beauty in everything; the interplay of colors in a weathered building, the shifting shadows of a quiet street, or the glow of the sun catching the edge of a leaf. Inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold to celebrate its history rather than conceal its flaws, I often use gold leaf to highlight the cracks and imperfections in my work. This philosophy resonates deeply with me, both in art and in life, reminding us that when things fall apart, they can be rebuilt into something still beautiful. By combining traditional and modern techniques, I aim to bridge realism with abstraction, creating pieces that invite the viewer to pause, observe, and see the world through a lens of wonder. Each brushstroke, ink detail, and gilded highlight serves as a reminder that even in imperfection, there is elegance, depth, and meaning.
I have been a Skillshare teacher for five years and am the creator of The Wandering Sketchbook Club, which has over 1,700 members and has hosted events in Silicon Valley, New York City, and Philadelphia. I also founded the Urban Sketchers San Jose, California chapter and have volunteered by leading Art Journaling workshops at a homeless shelter and nonprofit organizations. With a passion for bringing communities together, I use art as a way to connect people with one another and the world around them.
