Christine Crockett
Christine Crockett
In my paintings I aim to capture spirit with imperfect math. Geometry, diagrams, blueprints and grids excite my imagination, much like poetry. Lines describe, connect, and make meaning within the universe of color and form. Merging elements of expressionism and minimalism, I seek the right balance between emotional exuberance and logical containment. This tension drives both the subject and the process of my work.
My Process
I paint on paper or birch panels prepared with roughly applied layers of plaster and pigment, followed by layers of oil paint and cold wax, which are then sanded and carved and stained to reveal a complex, map-like substrata. I wait for that moment when the historical layers whisper through the surface, like a palimpsest.
