Natalia Drachinskaya
I’m a sculptor and a mixed media artist.
The central theme in my artistic practice is exploring the mechanisms of memory: de-construction and re-construction of memories. Through my artworks I try to metaphor the algorithms of the identity reassembling.
My favorite sculptural material is concrete; it refers to my Soviet childhood and Soviet architecture. Concrete is the foundation material, a metaphorical reflection of the role of memory in the construct of self-identification. Concrete, like memory, can exist in different states and forms: be cold or heated by the sun, be hard or cracked, and concrete is also a heavy material. Its heaviness can be metaphorically compared to the baggage of personal memory and traumatic experience.
Paper is the light and fragile material. It represents our vulnerability facing challenges and remembering uncomfortable past. Rearranging paper fragments, making something new out of the scraps is the best practice mirroring the real life process of digestion, coming over and self-reassembling for the better future.
