Allison Kroeger

I am a mixed media abstract artist working with acrylic paints, drawing materials, and handmade collage papers. My art is the accumulation of my lived experiences coupled with daily practices which include: meditation and yoga, looking at the colors, textures, and shapes in nature, viewing and teaching art, and spending time in my home studio.

For me, making art is a practice and a process with little concern about the outcome. I may have a concept that I am working on, such as color or pattern or mark making, then proceed from there. It is conversation that begins with the materials, a call and response, that informs each step I take. I build up layers, allowing the process and the materials lead the way. This requires that I stay fully present and sensitive, as I look and listen to how each step is relating to the whole. I am intrigued by the layers, how a history is revealed without me really ever trying to make it happen. So each piece is a process of building up and subtraction until I am satisfied with the result. Design, value, color, line, shape, etc are all part of the listening process and these elements create a visual language in the work. However, the magic is in the materials and my response.
