Spending countless hours studying cells under the microscope during graduate school sparked my interest in the seen world, and photography as a way to record it. Initially used to convey information, photography quickly became a means to explore ideas, emotion, and story. My photography focuses on found objects and spaces with a strong bent towards abstraction, which feels more representative of life’s uncertainties and complexity than representational imagery. In recent work I’ve begun folding, crumpling and curving my photographs, resulting in unique, three-dimensional "sculptural photographs", and have begun using tens and hundreds of these to create site-specific art installations. I also make paper sculpture and installations without photographic images. I’ve been featured at Leonardo events and Shooting the West and exhibited nationally and internationally. I live and have a studio in Redwood City, CA. My work can be followed most closely through email (register at cindystokes.com) as well as on Instagram (@cindystokesstudio) and Facebook (Cindy Stokes Studio). My website is www.cindystokes.com

I dye the silk base for the scarf and then lay down fibers that are a blend of cashmere and silk, then cover with a piece of mesh to keep the scarf from becoming a ball. After applying soapy water, the scarf is manipulated to ensure that the fibers have connected to both each other and the silk base.

The American Educator Encyclopedia was first published in 1919. It was discontinued in 1977. This ten volume set of encyclopedias was used by Nanette's partner in his youth from the mid 1960s to around 1978. In the late 90s Nanette turned the books into art objects, painting them pure white. After exhibiting them a few times she put them outside in the garden where they were left for several decades. At some point it was decided they reached an aesthetically pleasing degree of decay, needed rescue, and were brought indoors. In 2023 we determined it was time to document the books, thus, Encyclopedic Weathered Volumes was photographed to create this conceptual body of work.Series of 20 views presented as archival pigment prints on Arches in an edition of five each.
