A blank silk scarf is wrapped around a pole held tightly with string. As the wrapping continues, the scarf is pushed up to create exposed non-exposed fabric. The dye is painted on, but only reaches the exposed fabric. After the dye has set, it is unwrapped, washed, ironed ready to wear.

I had been working with this series of images since 2005 when I photographed a shadow artist in a cabaret like setting in Chengdu, China. "The Power of Music" is a layered wood piece that explores the dualities of music and how it affects us... how music simultaneously emanates outward while penetrating inward... how it is private and intimate, or shared and communal... how it can define a moment or dredge up the past... how it can be mundane and subtle or intensely spiritual. Through music, we find connection with ourselves and with others, breaking down superficial boundaries and reveling together.

Based on B is for Babar An alphabet book by Laurent de BrunhoffI learned to read script at a very early age from the pages of Babars famous adventures. My affection for Babar and his family was deeply connected to my fascination with the handwritten words that told their stories. As an adult, I embodied a connection to elephants which included a nostalgic, familial longing imbued with an animal rights, conservation approach. With the help of more books I began to understand some of the challenges non-human sentient species such as elephants, experience, and their plight in competition with humans for territory, resources and the sanctity of dominion over their own lives in their own bodies in appropriate habitats. Each piece is hand sculpted in my Redwood City studio before casting in sterling silver. Pendants are completed with gemstone and glass bead necklaces.
