Mykola Kulishov
I am a self-trained woodworker and artist. I have been working with wood for more than 30 years. Originally from Ukraine, I currently live in California. My works explore the beauty and character that exist in wood, often as a result of environmental conditions. In that regard, wood is like a person: stress and living conditions develop interesting character in both. Much of the wood used in my sculptures is salvaged wood, repurposed from felled trees in the Bay area, trees that are given a second life in a new form. Every detail of my works is carefully sculpted, allowing you to appreciate the graceful curves, intricate textures, and lifelike forms that adorn these sculptures. The rich, warm tones of wood infuse your space with a sense of tranquility and a connection to the earth. Using carving techniques that I learned in my native Ukraine and perfected here, in the USA, wood carving has become my creative refuge. My works have been featured at art exhibitions in San Francisco, Kyiv, Palo Alto, Filoli park and other cities in California, Canada and Ukraine.

Blown, Grown Together
Glass bubbles, just like people, shape one another when in close proximity. This sculpture explores the physical aspects of being blown together to represent the emotional growth we do as people when we are together.
Blue Mountains
Thrown and altered cylinders with added pinch pot components, rutile glaze over black mountain clay, gas-fired cone 10 reduction.
Breakfast is Served
While on Safari in Tanzania I spent one foggy and wet morning watching this Bee Eater Mom feeding her brood one by one. Her diligence and tenacity in feeding her somewhat picky brood inspired me to paint her and her family.
Bubble Community I
Blown in San Jose State University's hotshop, this sculpture consists of a community of six glass bubbles resting on a seventh, larger, hyacinth bubble. This piece continues to explore the metaphor of bubbles shaping each other similarly to how we as humans influence each other.
California Dreaming
A mosaic painting of the Salinas River on 312 ceramic tiles. A waterproof backerboard is used, thinset and grout. This can be hung as is, or the frame can be removed and the piece can be inserted into a wall directly.Or individual, numbered tiles can be delivered.
California Poppy – Keep Hope Alive
This painting is a testament to resilience and the enduring power of nature to inspire and uplift the human spirit. Stirring optimism and a renewed belief in the possibilities of the future. It is a reminder that, like the resilient poppy, we too can bloom brilliantly after the harshest seasons, embracing the light and finding strength in our roots.
Camellia Friendship Circle
Friends are part of your daily tapestry of life. Without them, it would be difficult to survive life challenges. Your close-knit friends are those you know profoundly they will show up in the middle of the night with a helping hand. This camellia has a circle of petals surrounding the center. It reminds me of my circle of friends who have been my light source during seasons of darkness.

Central Park Winters
Central Park in Winter. Watercolor, Gouache, Metallic Ink, Gold Leaf.
Cherry Blossom
In this watercolor painting, I sought to capture the ephemeral beauty of a cherry blossom, a symbol of renewal and the fleeting nature of life. The composition features delicate pink petals rendered with soft, translucent washes, conveying their fragility and grace. The branches, painted with fluid, gestural strokes, provide a harmonious contrast, grounding the composition. The background is intentionally left understated, allowing the blossoms to emerge as the focal point, evoking a sense of serenity and contemplation. This piece reflects my fascination with nature's transient moments and the emotional resonance they carry.
Chicken Chair
I have been experimenting more with 3D and thought I would try creating interesting and fun chairs. They can be displayed or used as plant holders.
Chozuya
This wood sculpture represents a purifiction station in a Shinto Shrine which I see as being open to all people as a place in which to wash away cares and to honor nature and ancestors.
Chrysanthemum – Remembrance
Chrysanthemums symbolize remembrance, and white chrysanthemums, particularly, represent loyalty and love. Theyre also associated with the fall season, which can bring cheerfulness during the darker days of the year. As I painted this, I thought of my brother, who lost his battle with cancer in 2021. I spent time reflecting on the cherished moments we shared when we were little. The photo reference I used came from a bouquet I created during a flower arranging class I took with friends.
CityScape
"CityScape" is made with welded re-claimed steel. There are different textures based on the states of decay of the metal. Some pieces of metal have been sanded to shine as well.
Complexity
Spray paint on poster paper. The image is an exploration of complexity created by changing directions of straight lines. Straight lines of rules and directions Create the base of order But every now and then we twist them Bend them and flex them Creating a beautiful complexity We call Life
