What is a artist?
My father told me, "Never take on a title unless others have given it to you."
A part of me goes into every piece I make. I planned it. I studied it. Sometimes it required research and sometime it required deep soul-searching.
When I create a memory quilt for a client I see the dedication of the parents. There are the family vacations, the ball games and track meets, the band rehearsals and performances. I see many hours of driving, but also times of laughter, lots of cheering, occasional tears, and moments of immense pride. These quilts tell the story of a family that they will relive whenever they view the quilt and will pass on the stories for generations. It is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.
So does that make me an artist?
I consider this my freshman year and will explore my "artistic" side. I will work with whatever is in front of me whether it be fabric, cardboard, or a nut and bolt. I will use it. Combining my cultural and religious roots with my social and educational experience I hope to create works that deliver a story worth retelling or an apt message to pass on.
Perhaps that is what makes an artist.
