Flowers
This mug was a result of some experimentation with geometric shapes made from uniform strips of detailing tape. It collects most of the studio glazes I have access to which are fairly stable for my style of decoration. The piece was thrown from reclaimed clay with a bit of T2 to provide the speckles. The flower shapes are a combination of hole-reinforcement stickers (round bits) and detailing tape. The overall cream is a dipped va glaze, while the various colors were applied using a bulb applicator, and include an iron red, yellow salt, tenmoku, bird’s beak blue, noxema, ferg yellow, and woo blue. The piece was oxidation fired to cone 10. Some of the red flashing (such as around the white flower) is a result of an interaction between the clay and the glaze in oxidation.

After retiring from software engineering, I decided to take some classes at Foothill. I picked two subjects that I enjoyed in college, Calculus and Ceramics. I quite enjoyed both classes, but I quickly noticed that I arrived early and stayed late for pottery. I love the way that pieces magically form on the wheel. A few years back I started focusing on mugs, because I feel that the form wants to be handled and admired and used. That in turn allows me to feel comfortable investing more effort into planning and execution of designs, which exercises my engineering mind in concert with my artistic mind.
