Harmony of the Spheres A Section
Harmony of the Spheres is an open distributed multi-media performance and artwork by Amy Lynn Freeman and anyone else who cares to participate. The piece is inspired by Terry Rileys In C for orchestra. The full piece is a set of three 24 x 24 oil on canvas paintings, one for each section of the musical composition. There is a secret code hidden in the patterns of each painting that contain the instructions needed to play the music on the piano, but once understood, on any instrument. I created the piano piece for my students to learn improvisation and have used visual concepts in teaching music for years, but never to this extent before. So I am excited – but also unsure – of how this will be received). Who is out there who can figure out my code

I am an Expressionist Symbolist painter, meaning I see art as a way to express feelings more than the realistic representation of objects. I am influenced in part by the painters of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements in Europe, including Monet, Degas, Renoir, Manet and many others, but I am more fundamentally aligned with the artistic traditional of the Bauhaus Movement, particularly Klee and Kandinsky, Der Blaue Reiter, The School of Paris and Frantisek Kupke and Robert and Sonia Delauney of the Orphist Movement. Many of these artists asserted strong connections or even integrations between visual art and music or the art of sound – as do I:)!
Although the Symbolist Movement is better known in the history of Literature, in Art, the artists Gauguin, Matisse, Redon and Klimt are considered Symbolist Painters, and after Bauhaus have the most influence on my work.
Almost all of my work is inspired by a feeling – as opposed to a thing – and I often paint when I cannot find words that can express those emotions. Most of my paintings have multiple meanings and messages – some which I want the general viewer to see – some of which are more targeted to a specific person or audience, but then the audience may change over time.
For example, my latest painting "Harmony of the Spheres", is a visual representation of a musical composition I created for my piano students, but which I now share with a broader audience.
I studied art, literature, languages and music at Amherst College, and the art of Bel Canto with Mrs. Eloise Finardi at Amherst and Anna Hamlin in NYC, both former instructors at the La Scala Opera House in Milan, Italy, considered at the time to be the "heart of the Bel Canto" tradition.
I studied drawing, painting and color theory at the Art Student’s League of New York, and sketching, painting and color theory at Foothill College in Los Altos, CA. I also hold a Bachelors of Science in the Philosophy of Science from Empire State College, State University of New York, A Certificate in Computer Technlogies from New York University and an MBA from Columbia University. I have built and managed large and small companies in the non-profit, defense, financial services and media industries.
