I center my artistic research in the urban landscape. I approach the city as a visual archeologist in search of evidence of the transformation of man and society through different epochs. Hints of this transformation are present in the different types of architecture layered in our cities, the different materials used in construction, and the marks left by the forces of nature on the man-made structures. From this array of forms, colors, and structures, I appropriate recurrent objects that have a strong symbolic potential, such as windmills, electric towers, chimneys, and buildings, and I use them in my compositions in order to evidence the constant interplay of man attempting to conquer nature, and nature’s resilience to restore balance. My compositions are laid down as a stage in which there is a clear difference between figure and background. The background is static and represents nature, the balancing force. The structures represent the dynamic force of man altering the landscape, and my paintings become a freeze frame in the eternal dance of man and nature, responding to each other’s input in a symbiotic relationship from which I attempt to generate a reflection through visual cues on the current state of our society.
