Jonathan Kermit
As a long-time collector of urban flotsam, I have always been attracted to the cast off, the leavings. Bits of discarded twisted, rusty wire form the basis of my current work. I find and gather up this wire most frequently at construction sites where it is used in a variety of ways and then tossed aside.
These wire fragments get stepped on, run over, rained on, and buried. The environmental effects, both natural and human induced, often produce curiously organic shapes. Working with these shapes I incorporate them into my pieces and with subtle manipulation try to retain much of that inherent natural form. I combine these forms intuitively with paper imagery which includes eco dyed papers, monoprints, cyanotypes and a variety of handmade papers.
