Shining Through
Look upon these majestic trees (I think they may be Monkey Pod or Banyan Trees) on the Honolua Bay Access Trail, also known as the Enchanted Forest Trail to Honolua Bay in Maui. I was absolutely stunned by their utter awesomeness when I stood amongst them. The light filtered through the tree made it even that much more magical — for a moment I thought I was in the world created by Tolkien. What a fairytale setting. I am inspired by hope, encouragement, joy and peace. I paint to capture the essence of warmth and the light we see, or want to see, in the world that’s also reflected in the core of our being.
The majority of my work center around nature right now. I want to create art that can serve as a visual sanctuary — a reminder of hope, a place where the beauty meets the comfort of a refuge, a space for reflection.
I use my own photos for reference and sometimes I paint en plein air. Instead of painting what I see, I paint how it feels like to be there: the tree trunks redder, the colors warmer, and the light coming through consistently and gently. I like to present light like how I see hope shining through — it’s never intrusive, always consistent, and sometimes almost difficult to look for. But it’s always there as a reminder that better days, or perhaps better moments, to come.
My style has a hint of realism in it. With acrylic paint, I prefer building my art in layers, and apply a good amount of dry brushing. My current subject matter is based on places that have brought me peace, joy, or delight. Trees (especially redwoods), nature, Hawaii, and the ocean all hold a special place in my being.
