Small Town Welcome
This barn was just outside the small town of Tulelake, California. It is a rural area, sustained almost entirely by agriculture, studded with grain silos and sprawling fields. Someone, (or perhaps the town elders) had decided at some point to use the side of a barn to welcome visitors and residents with a hand painted sign with a depiction of the countryside and the words "Welcome to Tulelake". It had seen better days, worn down by hard winters and hot summers, but the words and the sentiment were still there.

Nancy Wagstaff
My travels to remote and emptier parts of the western U.S. are the source and inspiration for my paintings. Although the subject matter for my paintings might seem disparate, it is united by a sense of the not too distant past that we, as Americans, share. I am drawn to objects and scenes that not only speak of another time and place, but that ask the viewer to contemplate the beauty, dignity, and mystery of their existence. The vast and empty expanses of the West can also can be the subject matter of my paintings. And when I am between paintings, I enjoy portrait drawing.
