Sun Glow – Shelter Cove
Shelter Cove in Pacifica is indeed sheltered. It’s accessible only by a steep set of weathered wooden steps on the east and protected on the north and south by rough rocky outcroppings. Media: textured acrylic with metallic highlights, painted on stretched canvas.

Janet Arline Barker
Creator of Amazing Representations of Truth (ART)®
Painting is that peaceful and expressive journey. It gives me energy and purpose. It is a dance I do with brush in hand, propelled by color, infused with fresh air and the sounds around me.
I am inspired by the beauties and wonders around me. My impressions, feelings, and experiences translate nature’s glorious details into oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings. My happy place is outside in nature. I am always surprised and amazed how music, sounds of nature and the beauties around me influence my style, media, color choices and compositions. These inspirations create heart-felt art. “Glow, Sparkle, Flow” represents a new body of work started in 2020 to brighten my outlook on life and inspire others to do the same. I have developed techniques with metallic and pearlescent paints that transform artworks somewhat like a hologram does. Viewed from different angles and with various lighting throughout the day, the colors change, the focal point changes, and the intensity changes from subtle to brilliant. Experiencing these fine art abstract and impressionistic paintings is magical and very personal. These works encourage others to receive, reflect, relax, respond and recreate.
My professional art career started with a playful practice and dedication to Japanese Brush Painting, mostly with black ink on rice paper. Landscapes, seascapes, flora and fauna from the Rocky Mountains to coastal California took form with free-flowing brushstrokes. For over 15 years I continued Japanese Brush Painting (Sumi-e), while working as an award-winning graphic designer, illustrator and photographer.
In 2006 I merged my passion for hiking with Plein air painting and found joy in creating colorful pieces in beautiful places. A few years later, my love for music inspired me to find venues where I could paint on stage with live choral groups, jazz musicians and eclectic bands. Music reaches deep inside my heart and moves me. My hands are extensions of my heart and create free-flowing art, some loosely representational, some abstract.
I can honestly say, “I’m living life in full color as an artist & photographer.”
P.S. College-educated, 2 years of post-grad studies in art and science, art classes/workshops galore. (However being in nature, observing and experimenting with paint on canvas is where my most valuable lessons are learned.) Juried plein-air events, gallery shows and museum exhibits too. Done it all. Excited for what’s next!
