Spending countless hours studying cells under the microscope during graduate school sparked my interest in the seen world, and photography as a way to record it. Initially used to convey information, photography quickly became a means to explore ideas, emotion, and story. My photography focuses on found objects and spaces with a strong bent towards abstraction, which feels more representative of life’s uncertainties and complexity than representational imagery. In recent work I’ve begun folding, crumpling and curving my photographs, resulting in unique, three-dimensional "sculptural photographs", and have begun using tens and hundreds of these to create site-specific art installations. I also make paper sculpture and installations without photographic images. I’ve been featured at Leonardo events and Shooting the West and exhibited nationally and internationally. I live and have a studio in Redwood City, CA. My work can be followed most closely through email (register at cindystokes.com) as well as on Instagram (@cindystokesstudio) and Facebook (Cindy Stokes Studio). My website is www.cindystokes.com
