Each piece begins with the turning of the potters wheel. The nature of this organic material dominates the landscape in which decisions are made. I aspire to compose vessels filled with energy and balance. My efforts are focused on a unity of form and surface while maintaining the broader attention to function. I am inspired by the familiarity of these forms as they relate to our daily life and rituals. These considerations drive my daily efforts to create pottery that will find a special place in the hearts and hands of their users.
Porcelain is my most frequent clay of choice. I enjoy its subtle nature. It’s beauty is enhanced with the accompaniment of celadon glazes that pool and break subtly over form and surface design. These glazes have a rich history in Asian ceramics, and are fired in a gas reduction kiln to cone 10.
I discovered my passion for clay a few years after having received a BFA in studio arts with an emphasis in printmaking from Drake University. I have taken numerous classes and workshops at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis MN, La Meridiana Ceramics School in Tuscany Italy and others.
I have exhibited work at several juried festivals, art crawls and galleries in California and Minnesota.
I am an exhibiting member of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California and published in American Artwork 2024.
I am currently working in my studio at The Tannery Arts Center ,Santa Cruz CA where my work may be viewed during First Friday Art Tour 6-9 pm, special events and by appointment.
