My passion for photography began with taking "trick" pictures in my 1950’s childhood. For example, I would have my brother lie upside down on a slope at the end of our backyard with his arm outstretched over his head. I positioned my camera behind an upside-down stool to create in the photograph the image of a tiny upside-down person balancing on one of its leg.
When I was about 12 my dad gave me a Yashica 8mm movie camera with three lenses that was capable of shooting frame rates of 8, 16, 32, or 64 fps. This afforded me the ability to shoot 2x speedup or 4x slow motion when played back at 16 fps on the movie projector. Boy did I have a good time with that movie camera as I documented all manner of family outings. In the summers of 1960 and 1961, it accompanied me to Stanford’s Chuck Taylor Coaching Camp where I documented my experiences.
In the 1980’s and 1990’s my three children afforded me endless video opportunities, beginning with a “portable” bulky VHS recorder and then a succession of new formats as technology advanced. The unifying goal over the decades can be summed up in two words: capturing memories.
In my retirement years, I have had the opportunity to travel extensively. I have aspired to do more than capture memories, but to make memorable landscape and wildlife photographs. I look forward to participating for the first time as a 2024 Silicon Valley Open Studios artist.
