Painting outdoors focuses my awareness to the landscape, weather, seasons, and changing light, tuning me in to both place and my mind-space. It’s connected to my understanding my experience of the geography of the bay area as a peninsula native, use of art to play/learn/journal, and indirectly to being an architect.
During the pandemic first summer I started hiking and painting with a set of gouache paints, learning by trial and error and success along the way, and I’ve continued this process since then in the bay area and beyond. My interests in artmaking and media are not limited to gouache, but its what I use most frequently these days.
Twice a year I do a focused challenge via Instagram where I paint landscapes from life every day for a month. I’m learning how to record the settings yet making choices about what to edit in or out. The next step is to take the plein air studies I’ve made and translate them into bigger pieces in the studio; yet for now it’s about practice, challenges, hope, and reward.
I’m happy to share where I’ve been and what I’ve seen along the way.
